Do you want to be successful in life? Do you want to be wealthy? Do you want to make big changes in the world around you? Do you want to make a difference? Do you want to be remembered for tens, hundreds or even thousands of years? Maybe it’s something as simple as just making a difference in one person’s life? Then again maybe you want to make massive change – it doesn’t matter, but without drive and determination your hope or chances of success is basically nil.
What makes some people achieve greatness and others don’t even come close? What is the difference that makes some people super successful and others average or below average? Why is it some people struggle with their finances or other things in life whereas others have an overabundance of money, personal wealth, friends, power and influence, etc.?
The difference is simple it’s called drive and determination. If you have these you will pursue whatever it is you want with the fierceness. With a passion. When life throws roadblocks in your way you will just leap over them or find another route around them. And you also be forced to learn from your mistakes. That’s what drive and determination do.
Every body out there runs into hardships and roadblocks in life. It doesn’t matter if they came from a wealthy and/or privileged family or if they came from the hood or the projects. Everyone has a choice or many choices to follow everyone else or to be different and make a difference. Regardless of what life throws in your way, each drive ensure determination that can and will carry you through it to great levels of success. If you need an example of this and there are many of them out there just look at Dr. Glenn Cunningham – one of the most famous long-distance runners of all time and once owner of the world record for the indoor 1 mile run.
Dr. Glenn Cunningham is a eight-year-old little boy that suffered extremely severe burns to his lower extremities due to an accident at his school. These burns were so severe that the doctors had written him off and told his parents to prepare for his burial. Glenn wanted nothing to do with he was determined to live. When they saw that he was going to survive the doctors then wrote them off as being a lifetime cripple and that his legs would be useless and wanted them amputated. His mother refused to let that happen. His legs were severely disfigured from deep burns from his hips to his toes
They put them in a wheelchair to take him home after months in the hospital. Glenn wanted to walk and get moving so he would actually literally dragged himself out of his wheelchair and across the lawn to their fence and hold himself up by the fence and slowly try and walk. He did this for months on end and was finally able to walk. Then he started to run. He learned that he loved to run and kept running and running.
He soon entered competitions and became a track and field star and even set the indoor 1 mile time record that stood for many years. What caused Dr. Glenn Cunningham to rise from the ashes of certain death and amputation and become one of the greatest runners and athletes of our time? Was it the quality of care or great doctors? No, they had all given up on him and told his parents to prepare for his burial.
The ones that didn’t give up on him wanted to amputate his legs saying that they were going to be worthless and he would never be able to walk again. It was an internal fire within Glenn Cunningham. He had a extreme drive and he was determined that he was not going to be a cripple. When he would drag himself across the lawn and his legs just hopelessly fell behind him and Payne was shooting up through his body he did not give up. He kept going on.
It was his drive and determination that made him make it across the backyard to the fence and then it was his drive and determination that made them hold onto the fence and try every day to use his legs as much as he possibly could. Day by day slowly strengthen his legs to the point where eventually he could stand and walk a little bit. He didn’t stop there he kept going. As the saying goes when the going gets tough, the tough get going – Glenn Cunningham really got going and he did it every single day many times per day.
He never gave up. He could easily have sat back and felt sorry for himself. But what would that have gotten him? He would’ve stayed a cripple for the rest of his life. Instead through his drive and determination he uncovered that he had some true abilities that were hidden and he never knew about them. If his legs had not been badly burned in the fire that was caused by a freak accident at his school when he was eight years old then he may never of had the drive and determination to become such a great athlete and overcome such great odds.
